The chart highlights the most widely spoken languages in Asia and shows the dominance of a few major linguistic groups. Mandarin Chinese stands far above the others, with roughly 1.2 billion speakers. This reflects both China’s enormous population and the widespread use of Mandarin as a national standard language across the country.
Interestingly, although China and India have broadly similar population sizes, Mandarin has far more speakers than Hindi. This difference largely reflects the greater linguistic diversity of India. China is comparatively more linguistically homogeneous, with Mandarin promoted as the standard language through education, media, and government. In contrast, India is extremely diverse linguistically, with dozens of major languages and hundreds of smaller ones. Hindi is the most widely spoken language, but many Indians speak regional languages such as Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, or Gujarati instead.
Other major languages on the chart reflect large regional populations. Indonesian, from the Austronesian language family, serves as a unifying national language across Indonesia’s many islands. Arabic, from the Afro-Asiatic family, is widely spoken across the Middle East, while Bengali is another major Indo-European language centered in Bangladesh and eastern India. Japanese, though spoken mainly in one country, still appears due to Japan’s large population.
This chart shows the genetic linguistic distance of several languages from English, illustrating how closely or distantly related they are based on historical language families. As expected, languages from the same Germanic family are the closest. Lowland Scots appears as the nearest language to English, reflecting their shared development from early forms of Germanic speech in the British Isles. Although Lowland Scots is often popularly described as a corrupted or heavily accented form of English, linguists generally consider it a distinct language with its own vocabulary, grammar, and historical development.
German is also relatively close to English because both belong to the West Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family. Romance languages such as French and Spanish appear further away since they evolved from Latin, though they still share deep Indo-European roots with English.
One particularly notable feature is the position of Irish. Despite Ireland’s close geographic proximity to England, Irish is linguistically much more distant. This is because Irish belongs to the Celtic branch of Indo-European, which diverged from the Germanic languages thousands of years ago. Languages such as Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, and Japanese appear furthest from English because they belong to entirely different language families with no close historical connection.
The chart shows the Native American languages with the largest number of speakers across North and South America. The two most widely spoken are Guarani and Southern Quechua, both concentrated in South America. Guarani is particularly notable because it remains widely used in Paraguay and even holds official status alongside Spanish, helping it survive as a living everyday language. Quechua, associated historically with the Inca Empire, continues to be spoken by millions across the Andes, especially in Peru and Bolivia.
Although the two largest languages are not spoken in Mexico, the country is still strongly represented on the list. Several of the languages shown—including Nahuatl, Yucatec Maya, Kʼicheʼ, Mam, and Tzeltal—are spoken primarily in Mexico and Central America, highlighting the region’s extraordinary linguistic diversity and the continued vitality of many indigenous communities there.
A striking feature of the chart is that none of the top ten languages come from the largest country in the Americas, the United States. This reflects the particularly severe decline of indigenous populations in the U.S. and Canada after European contact, due to disease, displacement, and assimilation policies that suppressed native languages. At the same time, the regions south of the Rio Grande had far larger pre-Columbian populations, particularly in Mesoamerica and the Andes, allowing more indigenous languages to survive with large numbers of speakers.

Mandarin Chinese dominates the list with around one billion native speakers, reflecting China’s enormous population and the widespread use of Mandarin as the national standard language. Spanish and English follow, both of which have hundreds of millions of native speakers across multiple continents.
One notable absence is Arabic, which would normally appear on such a list. However, the source used here, Ethnologue, classifies Arabic as a macrolanguage, meaning that it is divided into many distinct regional varieties such as Egyptian Arabic, Levantine Arabic, and Gulf Arabic rather than being counted as a single language.
Another striking feature is that several languages have more native speakers outside their original homeland than within it. English, Spanish, and Portuguese spread globally through European colonial settlement. Spanish in particular is spoken across a large number of relatively populous countries in Latin America, which helps explain its very high number of native speakers.
Finally, the presence of Western Punjabi reflects Pakistan’s large population. Western Punjabi is the main variety spoken in Pakistan (distinct from Eastern Punjabi in India), and its inclusion on the list is largely due to the demographic weight of Punjab within Pakistan.
