GDP by Majority Religion

INTRODUCTION

This page shows statistics about GDP by majority religion including GDP of countries by largest religion.

Charts

1. Share of Global GDP PPP by Countries by Largest Religion

2. GDP PPP of Countries by Largest Religion

The chart shows the share of global GDP (PPP) produced by countries where different religions are the largest. Countries with Christian majorities account for the largest share, just over half of global economic output. This reflects the presence of many of the world’s most economically developed countries in Europe, North America, and parts of Latin America where Christianity is historically dominant.

The second largest share comes from countries where Asian folk religions are prevalent, largely driven by China’s enormous economy. Muslim-majority countries contribute a significant but smaller share, reflecting the large populations and growing economies of countries such as Indonesia and Turkey.

Hindu-majority countries account for a smaller but notable portion, largely due to India’s rapidly expanding economy. Buddhist-majority countries contribute a relatively small share, as many such countries have smaller economies.

Overall, the chart highlights how global economic output is concentrated in regions with large populations and historically industrialized economies rather than reflecting religious influence itself.
